Police Organization Chart

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I wanted to share with you a Police Organizational structure. The purpose of this guide is to provide you with the tools you need to succeed either through running your own server or running your department.

How many times have you seen player governments and player police departments have SOOOO many people just to run a small department? This guide helps circumvent the same struggle with simple organization. This guide uses the Incident Command System, much like the one used in real life by virtually every police department in the United States.

The Structure: 5768013a01046_PoliceOrg.thumb.PNG.01b306

This Structure identifies the Police Chief as being the top of communication for the department. Notice that no arrows cross without going through the chief first. A Captain from Interdiction has no ability to communicate with the Captain of Traffic without first going through the Chief. In other words, The Captain of Interdiction has no command and control over any other department. Neither do the Captains or LT's of the other departmental functions.

This can be used as a chain of command, as well as it can be used as an organizational structure. Break your departments up into 3 groups. The best way to do this is to use: Interdiction, Traffic, and Training. Below these groups can be any of the special functions of those sections.

For Example, Interdiction can house a LT for Drug Interdiction, another LT for Firearms Interdiction, and a third LT for Criminal Interdiction. The traffic Captain can have separate sub departments as well such as Motorcycle patrol, walking officers, and armed escorts. The Captain of training can have special weapons training, high angle rescue, and reports. The sky is the limit to which sub-departments you want your officers to have.

The point is to organize these departments in their respective places. It allows for communication and it will cut down dramatically on your drama within the department.

There is no need for an assistant chief with this system.

This is a 1:3 Structure and can easily be expanded into a 1:4-1:7 if needed for department size.

Will this be able to include, for example, call centers, where the call operators can contact the relevant department or unit and dispatch members of the force to a crime? Like in the real world?
I think that would be a critical part of the police communications.

I think this would be great but with some changes. I really think that if it turns into a 1:7 or possibly more kind of situation, things could go wrong. In the NoPixel Arma 3 community, the past police chief "Max Kit" was in charge of so much that he eventually gave up because of all the stress. There should be some people to help the police chief and make it possibly a 2:7 or even a 3:7 if need be but a structure where it turns into a

Chief ^

  Assistant ^                                                           Assistant ^                                                                                Assistant ^                         Assistant ^

|                   |                                                     |           |                                                                                       |        |                                        |        |

Division ^    Division ^                          Division ^    Division ^                                                                         Division ^ Division ^                    Divisions ^

I think that this with some minor changes could be a better route because the 4 people answer to the chief and then the 4 supervisors/assistants tell the division commanders what to do and so on and so forth down the chain. This would keep the chief in power while maintaining control and stability within the force and most importantly trust. This would also give the chief some breathing room as he can trust his supervisors/ assistans (w.e. you want to call them) to make important decisions. If you have any questions or comments then feel free to ask. :) I have no life so imma be on here a lot :D <3

Maybe there is a police chief for the 3 different cities? and then the commissioner is above them.

So;

Commissioner

Thoughts?

On Asylum (ArmA 3) our police system works as following:

We have a Chief of Police, who is head of the police force as a whole, and head of the Captains.

Secondly, we have the Captains.
Captains are also the leaders of the police force, but will still have to put their decisions and thoughts down by the CoP.

Lieutenants.
Lieutenants are responsible for interviewing people that want to join the police force and are responsible for them completing their exams correctly before whitelisting them.

Sergeants.
Sergeants are mostly an in-game support officer. A Sergeant is responsible for certain callouts that officers of lower ranks are not allowed to make. Also are they responsible for scouting officers that are eligible for promotion. Besides that, they are responsible for doing peoples ride-alongs. Ride-along is needed for when a cadet-week has finished and this officer feels like he is ready for promotion.

Corporals.
Corporals are mainly officers with a bit more in-game abilities. They are also responsible for keeping everything serious and official while on patrol.

Constables.
Constables are normal police officers. They have all basic abilities a police officer needs to perform normal duty. They are also responsible for teaching cadets the ropes and making sure they understand everything before doing their ride-along.

Cadets.
Cadets are newly whitelisted civilians that got accepted in to the police force. They are forced to play cop only for 1 week. They may have their ride-along on the 8th day.

I personally like this system a lot, and I hope something like this is taken in mind when organizing the police force. :D

Hey fellow Law Enforcers,

Might be better to keep a good structure inside your department besides just your police ranks. In real life ranks are often given to people in charge of certain Divisions, Precincts or Specialisations. For example often a person in charge of a Office is a Deputy Chief of Police, someone incharge of a precinct is a Captain, persons in charge of a Division are Lieutenant/Sergeants and persons in charge of Patrols or a watch is a sergeant.

This being said there is still a need of a hierarchy between the ranks. Often you start out with the Commissioner who will be in charge of your police forces and executes a observing and controlling role. Every city will have their Chief and Deputy chiefs to control their city with imput of the Commissioner. You should not look at ranks for your police structure, you should look at departments.

I made a small chart to give an example of how to make a structured police department.

It's also entirely possible for a division to be led by a sergeant or Precinct by a lieutenant however you shouldn't have 1 captain for every 2 lieutenants. It should depend on their quality not their quantity.

So what happens when the elected official because let's face it that's what a police chief is gets grounded from the gaming console or worse, moves out of the basement and into their own place but can't afford to pay for the internet they so love to use to give commands to their team, maybe the high end officials should be npc unless we are going to have an actual time in time off , overtime schedule people are going to follow, it's a game not real life, let's not give too much power to the players in that sense, as fun as it would be it's just not reliable . Especially for us adults who have real schedules and can't always commit. As much as we'd like too I might add lol
